Before and After Facial Contouring with Dermal Fillers
Filler Myths & Facts
People vary in their pain tolerance and how they respond to injections. Here are some common claims—and the truth behind them in these cosmetic injection facts.
Lie:You can go back to the office afterward; these are lunch-hour cosmetic injection procedures.
Truth: That all depends on what and how much you're getting, and where. "I've gotten Botox in my forehead and upper lip and a little Restylane in the grooves running from my nose to the corners of my mouth, and I've had bruising from both—sometimes not at all and sometimes it's pretty bad," says Kathy J., a 55-year-old literary agent in New York City. "I could go back to work, but I don't choose to."
Thomas Romo III, MD, director of plastic reconstructive surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, advises making an end-of-day cosmetic injection appointment and then going home and applying ice to minimize swelling, redness, and injection marks. Bruising is unpredictable, so have concealer handy for next-day use.
Lie:It doesn't hurt.
Truth: It does. Some patients find the process excruciating, warns Seth Matarasso, MD, a professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco. Topical numbing cream and icing pre- and postinjection helps, and an injection of lidocaine may be necessary to block pain in the sensitive lip area. Some injectables are laced with lidocaine, but numbness takes a few seconds to kick in, so don't count on it to curb the initial sting. "It's bloody painful, but it's bearable," says Susan J., a writer in her early 50s in Los Angeles.
Lie:You don't need "before" photos.
Truth:Baseline pictures should be taken. "These enable the doctor to know where you started in order to ensure you're getting the best result," says Los Angeles plastic surgeon Robert Kotler, MD, author ofThe Essential Cosmetic Surgery Companion.
