Annual Prostate Exams

Men at average risk for prostate cancer should see their doctors beginning at age 50 for annual exams to screen for prostate cancer risk. Men who are at a higher risk (African Americans and men with a first-degree relative diagnosed with prostate cancer at an early age) should begin screenings at age 45. The most common screenings used are a blood test to check levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and a digital rectal exam (DRE). Though this test can be slightly uncomfortable, it’s a small price to pay for preventing cancer.

When To Visit The Doctor

Two prostate-related problems require immediate treatment: acute prostatitis and urinary retention.Acute prostatitis occurs when bacteria from the urethra travels to the prostate, creating an infection that must be treated with antibiotics. Unlike other forms of prostatitis, it comes on quickly, producing these severe symptoms:

  • Fever, chills, and flulike symptoms
  • Pain in the prostate, scrotum, or lower back
  • Urinary frequency and blood-tinged urine
  • Painful ejaculation

In urinary retention, the prostate enlarges and blocks the flow of urine, potentially damaging the kidneys. If you notice a diminished flow, are unable to completely empty your bladder, or have a continuous urge to urinate but produce only a small trickle of urine, call your doctor immediately.
